Nice reading your post. I agree with your thoughts....indeed to reduce the chaos on Indian roads we need a vast improvement in the mass rapid transit system....but Nano is indeed a revolution of sorts in technological standards in the entire world.

Nice angles to the Nano story. I have not come across this particular degree of vision, especially in regard to the scooter family opting out for a safer mode of transport.

When one is presented with something as tangible as a production model, does the intangible become indiscernible? While extolling for ForceIndia in a current commercial, Sharukh Khan talks of unleashing the force of a Billion dreams! In the quest for $2,500 touchstone and emission standards, one thing which is getting ignored right now, I feel is, one hasn?t quite looked into how Nano might be an enabler platform for entrepreneurship and innovation?

We have already seen how the frill-less Indicab has cornered the booming carpool industry generated by the IT boom and off-hour working in India and brought about a whole crop of Car-rental-preneurship. What could Nano do?
Bring about short distance shuttle service (somewhere between auto and cab) in cities at a third of the cost (provided the CNG model is built)? After all more than 70%of cab usage is by one-two passengers who are luggage-less. A fact on which Goa mobike-cabs thrive on. We are then looking a cross-over of both Cabs and Autos. There?s already talk of autos switching over.

A carrier version of Nano could change the face of intra city logistics and drive up service industries. Imagine Bakers, confectionaries, florists, couriers etc now being empowered by a logistic service? The Mom-n-pop neighbourhood shop might yet have an antidote to being caught in the death throes of the mega-market venom. A new version of the burrow which Mom-n-pop stores of the west never had?
With financing, it makes a platform of entrepreneurship now accessible to a much lower common denominator, provided they (the lower denominators) unleash their inspiration on it.

I?m sure a fossil-fuel burning solution will definitely add to the fuel problem and road congestion and all the dire consequences the prophets of doom and drudgery have predicted. But Internet, the present day enabler is in itself a product of the Militaristic blow-up-the-world ages. I am reminded of what Michael Chricton had quoted in Jurrassic park, which I paraphrase as ?each creation finds its own purpose and evolves in unexpected unknown ways?(...Because the history of evolution is that life escapes all barriers. Life breaks free. Life expands to new territories. Painfully...).

I have a feeling that such will be the case of Nano too. For Nano has proved to the people of a nation that one can dream the impossible and achieve it. I wonder how many of the Billion dreams will take cue from the Nano and what will it unleash?

I believe that riding a Nano is safer than riding a bicycle or a motorcycle. The cheapest too!

India's public transport system is in a very bad shape. They are adding to the commuter's woes by putting in new systems rather than upgrading the existing systems. eg: the HCBS in Delhi

The ?people?s car? is a wonderful example of India?s mid-20st Century mindset and its squandered chance at 21st Century development. My short essay on this, India Going Nowhere Fast, can be read at http://memestreamblog.wordpress.com/2007/10/12/india-going-nowhere-fast/.
